Over the summer, Anisha had the opportunity to participate in the Critical Language Scholarship Study Abroad Program in Kolkata, India. During her time in India, Anisha studied Bangla, a language of her heritage, intensively for two months. When asked about her experience, Anisha commented, “I started the program as a Bangla novice and ended at an intermediate level. One of my best memories from the experience was writing a letter in Bangla to my grandfather. There had always previously been a linguistic barrier between us, but thanks to this opportunity, I was finally able to develop the language skills I needed to be able to express to him just how important our relationship is to me. Even now two months later, my grandfather will proudly tell anyone who is willing to listen about the letter I wrote to him.” Anisha is a volunteer with the organization Building Bridges, a student-led organization at UAB founded in July of 2015 with the purpose of ending senior citizen social isolation in the Birmingham area. Currently, Anisha volunteers as a buddy and technology tutor at Highland Manor Apartments, an independent living facility in Five Points Birmingham. She has been meeting with her buddy on a weekly basis for the past year and a half, participating in a variety of activities from getting lunch to attending cultural events they are both interested in, and they stay in touch on Facebook when they are unable to meet. When asked about her experience with the Building Bridges program and spending time with her buddy, Anisha explained, “My buddy in the building bridges program has impacted my life profoundly. There is so much wisdom and knowledge one can gain by befriending someone from a different generation, and I know our friendship is one I will cherish long after my time at UAB.” Anisha is also the current president of YouAB Learning, an organization that she helped found her freshman year and has been a part of ever since. Anisha volunteers with YouAB Learning at Children’s of Alabama Hospital as a tutor in the dialysis unit and as an on-call tutor. The patients that receive dialysis generally come in to receive treatment three times a week and often get behind on their schoolwork in the process. As a YouAB Learning tutor, Anisha works with the same patients each week to help them with their schoolwork and exam preparation, as well as provide encouragement and motivation for the students to stay passionate about school despite their health adversities. Lastly, Anisha also volunteers at the Crisis Center in Birmingham as a telephone counselor on the Crisis Line. As a counselor, I speak with callers about topics ranging from assistance with basic needs to serious thoughts of self-harm. After developing an understanding of the caller’s unique situation, I work with the caller to explore possible options and develop plans of self-care. For her years of service to so many volunteer organizations, Anisha has been chosen as the October STH Volunteer of the Month.

Days that she was not volunteering at clinics and hospitals were spent at community health programs where she helped adults and children that lacked access and transportation to health clinics. Volunteering with the community health program allowed her and to educate people on how to diagnose common diseases in the area such as AIDS and Tuberculosis and distribute appropriate medication or assist in taking individuals to clinics where they could obtain appropriate treatment. Not only did Danielle volunteer with medical related programs and facilities, but she also dedicated time to aiding children in orphanages and schools where she would help tutor and take care of the children. Katie Herron is a rising sophomore Materials Science and Engineering major in the Science and Technology Honors Program. Katie was recently elected as the 2016-2017 Volunteering Chair and Study Groups Coordinator for the Science and Technology Honors Program Student Executive Council. Immediately following her election, Katie eagerly sprung into action, organizing study groups for STH students during the summer and planning volunteering opportunities for the fall semester that have yet to be revealed. In addition to her recent election, Katie has a long history of volunteering during her first year at UAB, particularly in endeavors inspiring young people to engage in science and engineering. Katie has volunteered with the UAB Blazer BEST Robotics competition, a middle school and high school competitive robot-building event, helping make sure the event ran as smoothly as possible. Katie also played an instrumental role in the preparation and execution of the 2016 UAB Science Olympiad Competition, training to take on a greater role for next year’s competition as the Volunteer Coordinator. Most recently, Katie volunteered at the 2016 UAB Girls in Science and Engineering Day (GSED). When asked about her views on this event, Katie stated, “This event is a great opportunity for girls in the Birmingham area as they spend a day going to different workshops, from casting molds to extracting DNA, and learning about the opportunities that STEM careers provide. Volunteering to be a group leader and helping the girls move through different workshops meant a lot to me, since it was a past GSED that inspired me to pursue a career in science. My school’s science department didn’t have many funds, and GSED helped not only to show me the basic science ideas, but also STEM careers, such as engineering, that I didn’t know existed for women, It’s an event I was proud to volunteer at since I know it makes an impact on educating and inspiring the next generation in STEM.” For Katie’s passion for scientific education awareness and promising leadership endeavors, she has been chosen as the June STH Volunteer of the Month. We would like to thank Katie for her service to and passion for STH and the greater Birmingham area.
